Basenji dogs are a moderate to small sized breed with short hair.
They have a curled tail and triangular shaped ears that stand straight up (erect).
These small dogs usually weigh between 20 and 25 pounds.
At the withers, they are roughly 16 inches in height.
Their length typically matches their height at around 16 inches.
These dogs have different color variations, however the most common include:
red
black
white
tricolor (black with tan in the traditional pattern)
brindle (black stripes on a background of red)
Temperament
Basenji dogs are known for being curious, especially around strangers.
They are also relatively energetic, alert, and always affectionate.
This small dog can easily become attached to a single human and will typically remain loyal to that particular person. Thus, they are wonderful little companions for people who are single.
Unlike the bond they form with humans, Basenjis typically do not mesh well with other non-canine type pets.
They also dislike wet weather. They prefer dryness which allows them the opportunity to climb (which they enjoy doing).
Due to their athleticism, these small dogs have the ability to escape the conformities of wired fences.
This breed is not known for being loud and will usually not bark. Instead, they will make a low howl or hooting type sound.
Living Standards
Due to their energetic personality, this dog enjoys a moderate size yard to run in.
If you live in an apartment, this dog will be fine as long as you get him plenty of exercise.
Exercise
This breed should be walked on a daily basis (a moderate to long distance is recommended).
Be sure to allow these dogs to run in a safe blocked off area as well.
These small dogs love to play, so be sure to provide them with dog toys and a bone to chew on.
Litter Size
A Basenji puppy will normally be born into a litter of roughly 4 to 6 pups.
Health and Life Expectancy
These dogs are healthy and relatively strong for their size.
They will normally live a happy and healthy life when properly cared for.
Certain health issues related to this breed include:
For the best results, begin training your dog when he/she is a pup.
Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.
Grooming
Due to their short hair, this breed does not require a lot of maintenance from a grooming standpoint. In fact, much like a cat these small dogs will actually clean themselves.
This breed sheds very lightly and may only need brushing once a month.
When brushing, remember to use a softer style brush (ask your vet what they recommend).
In addition, they have sensitive skin and bathing them over the course of a few months is all that is required. Remember to use a mild shampoo when doing so (again, ask your vet what they recommend).
History
These dogs were used for hunting and originated in central Africa.
Seemingly, this breed is one of the more ancient dog breeds and has lived among humans for thousands of years.
Dogs resembling this breed have been identified on the stoned or wooden slabs in the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs.
These dogs were believed to be assistants to the hunt, chasing wild game into nets for their masters.
This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1944.
