Appearance

  • The Bichon Frise is a stocky litte dog.

  • They are between 9 and 15 inches in height (at the withers).

  • They typically weigh between 7 and 17 pounds.

  • This small dog has a white curly outer coat and a silky undercoat.

  • You may notice some buff, cream, or apricot coloring around the ears, snout, paws, or body. These colors however do not take up more than 10% of their total body coloring.

Temperament

  • The Bichon Frise is very mild mannered and intelligent.

  • They tend to be rather affectionate, playful, and sensitive.

  • These small dogs are typically bred as companion dogs and are wonderful with children.

  • This breed has no problems getting along with other dogs or other family pets.

  • They are relatively alert and will let you know when someone is at the door.

Living Standards

  • Due to their mild personality, this dog will be fine living in an apartment.

  • Just be sure get him plenty of exercise.


Exercise

  • This breed should be walked on a daily basis (a moderate to long distance is recommended).

  • Be sure to allow this breed to run in a safe open area as well.

  • This breed loves to play, so be sure to provide them with dog toys and bones to chew on.

  • This breed does not have the tendency to shed that much hair.

  • Regardless, grooming this breed on a regular basis is necessary.

  • Professional grooming once a month is recommended in order to keep this small dog looking his/her best.

  • Trimming around the eyes and ears is recommended as well.

History

  • These dogs are considered an older breed (originating around the 13th century).

  • This dog is related to the Barbichon breed (a Water Spaniel).

  • Due to their voyages through the Mediterranean, these small dogs became well known in countries such as France and Spain.

  • As mentioned earlier, they are bred primarily as companion dogs.

  • This small breed was first named the "Bichon Frise" in 1933.

  • These small dogs were recognized by the AKC in 1972.
