Appearance

  • The Brussels Griffon is a part of the toy group and has a unique looking face.

  • This small dog has been know for resembling the characters the "Ewoks", from the movie Star Wars Episode 6, The Return of the Jedi.

  • For instance, their muzzle is short (almost pushed in). Their black little nose is also short and they have an overbite, which causes their tongue to hang out at times.

  • Their ears sit high, regardless if they are cropped or natural.

  • They stand 7 to 8 inches tall.

  • They typically weigh between 6 and 12 pounds, yet feel heavier when you pick them up.

  • There are two types of Griffons in regards to the texture of their coat:

    1. Rough Haired Griffon (more common)
    2. Smooth Haired Griffon (easier to Groom)

  • There are also three color variations of their coat:

    1. Griffon Bruxellois – Red or reddish brown, black on the muzzle
    2. Griffon Belge – Black, black and tan, black and red
    3. Petit Brabancon – May have any variation of colors from the other two types.

Temperament

  • This small dog is respectfully intelligent.

  • They are known for their funny facial expressions and charming personalities.

  • This breed has no problems getting along with other dogs and is great with children.

  • This small dog is also relatively alert and can be a good little watch dog.

  • Keep in mind that it is important not to feed these small dogs people food. They will acquire a taste and may refuse to eat their own dog food.


Living Standards

  • This breed is perfect for apartment living.

  • They generally do not require a lot of outdoor activity.

Exercise

  • Short daily walks will be enough exercise for this small dog.

  • They tend to be relatively active indoors.

  • Be sure to have dog toys for them to play with and bones to chew on.

Litter Size

  • This breed will typically have between 1 and 3 pups per litter.

  • They are however, prone to caesarean sections during birth.


Health and Life Expectancy

    1. This breed is generally healthy.

    2. Certain health issues related to these dogs include:

      1. Cleft Palate
      2. Heat Stroke
      3. Glaucoma
      4. Cataracts
      5. Lens Luxation

    3. The life expectancy of this small dog is typically between 12 and 15 years of age.


Trainability and Obedience

  • This breed is not overly difficult to obedience train. As mentioned before, they are intelligent little dogs and can pick up on things rather quickly.

  • Keep in mind however, patience is needed when trying to housebreak these small dogs.

  • These dogs can also be taught a variety of tricks in addition to regular training.

  • Remember; make sure not to let these small dogs think they can "run" your home. It is imperative to show this breed that you are in control.

  • For the best results, begin training your Brussels Griffon when he/she is a pup.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • This breed does not shed very frequently. Grooming depends on the type of coat: rough or smooth.

  • The rough haired Griffon requires weekly brushing. In addition, their coat should be stripped and clipped every 2 to 3 months.

  • The smooth haired Griffon also requires weekly brushing. They do not need to be stripped or clipped however.

  • Be sure to monitor their eyes and wipe them clean of any debris.

History

  • The Brussels Griffon is originally from Belgium.

  • They are related to the Pug, Affenpinscher and the Ruby Spaniel.

  • The first Brussels Griffon Club developed in the U.S. dates back to 1945.

  • Unfortunately, this small dog is not an overly popular breed and is somewhat uncommon.

  • Despite not being popular, this dog did appear in the hit movie “As Good as it Gets” starring Jack Nicholson in the late 1990s.
