Small Dogs that Stay Small
Appearance
- Cesky Terriers have short legs and a moderately long body.
- They stand roughly 10 to 13 inches tall.
- They typically weigh between 13 and 23 pounds.
- These small dogs have somewhat of a bushy type beard, mustache and eyebrows.
- Their coat is silky and wavy.
- This small dog breed can be found in variety of colors including:
- gray-blue and tan
- gray
- white
- a light coffee looking color
- yellowish or sandy looking
- When pups, they are typically black. Their coat begins to change in the first two years.
Temperament
- These dogs are relatively calm for being part of the terrier family.
- They are not known for being overly aggressive or active.
- This does not mean that these dogs do not enjoy playful activities.
- These small dogs are highly intelligent and relatively loyal.
- They are good with children and other animals.
Living Standards
- Due to their calmness, this small terrier breed is perfectly fine for apartment style living.
- They do not have the tendency to become overly impatient or restless.
- If you have a home, a small yard will suffice. However, this is not a requirement.
Exercise
- These small dogs should be walked on a daily basis.
- This breed also enjoys running in safe areas.
- Regardless of their size, you can jog with your Cesky Terrier next to you on a leash.
Litter Size
- Cesky Terrier puppies will normally be born into a litter between 2 and 6 pups.
Health and Life Expectancy
- This small terrier is exceptionally healthy.
- This breed is only prone to what is called “Scotty Cramp”.
- "Scotty Cramp" is a minor problem that results in an awkward walking movement. This is not typically painful or life threatening.
Trainability and Obedience
- Due to their high level of intelligence, these small terriers are easy to obedience train.
- As mentioned earlier, they are quite loyal and prefer to follow their master's lead.
- If you do not distinguish that you are the leader however, this dog may become rather stubborn.
- Be firm and consistent with your commands and this little terrier will respond well.
- Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.
Grooming
- This small terrier does not tend to shed a lot of hair.
- Regardless, they should be brushed twice a week in order to prevent matting of the fur.
- These dogs should also be trimmed roughly four times a year. When trimming this breed, it is common to use an electric clipper.
- You should attempt to have the hair longer on the belly, legs, and in the face.
- Avoid bathing this small dog too often; this tends to dry their skin. Once every 8 weeks or so should suffice.
History
- This breed of terrier is rather new.
- They were developed by a Czech breeder named Frantisek Horak in 1948.
- This small dog is a cross between a Sealyham Terrier and a Scottish Terrier.
- These small dogs were developed for the purpose of hunting in the forests of Bohemia.
- This breed is recognized by all of the major kennel clubs and is one of the six most rare dog breeds in the world.
