What is Cherry Eye or Protruding Eye?
Cherry or protruding eye is a condition in which a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid appears as a pink mass protruding from the dog’s eye. Basically, dogs have a third eyelid that is located in the corner of each eye. This eyelid contains a tear gland that, for reasons unknown, falls out of its position.
Symptoms
It is typical to notice an oval like mass protruding from the dog’s third eyelid. The eyelid may also become swelled and irritated. There may be a mucous discharge as well.
Causes
This condition is believed to be a weakness of the connective tissue which attaches the gland to the eyelid.
Treatment and Prevention
In essence, the gland can be put back into place by means of surgery. This is the best option for curing this condition. Keep in mind that the gland of the third eyelid is vital in tear production. Thus, losing this gland can result in other types of issues such as “dry eye”. Topical ointments and other medications may also reduce any swelling that has occurred.
