The Chihuahua is recognized as the smallest breed of dog.
Their height tends to vary, but they are typically between 6 and 9 inches tall. However, they have been known to grow up to 15 inches in height as well.
They typically weigh between 2 and 6 pounds.
The ears of these small dogs stand straight up (erect).
As pups, they have a unique soft spot on the top of their head called a “molera”. As the dog reaches adulthood, the molera closes.
This breed is recognized by two coat variations: the long coat and the smooth or short haired (genetically, they are the same breed).
Seemingly, the long haired Chihuahua actually has a smoother coat than the short haired. In addition, the long coat tends to shed less than the short haired.
The Chihuahua can be found in a variety of solid colors and tri-colors with a unique array of designs. These solid colors and pattern designs can include, but are limited to the following:
red
white
black
fawn
orange
blue
chocolate
cream
brindle
sable
merle
tan points
Dalmatian spotting
extreme black spotting

Temperament
Regardless of their size, this breed is quite territorial as well as protective.
These small dogs can be aggressive and quick to attack when they feel threatened. As a result, they are not typically recommended for a family with young children.
This breed tends to be passionately loyal to one particular master and can even become jealous of that person’s human relationships.
This small dog is also alert and relatively hyper.
They are not always the best around other dogs or other animals. However, they do enjoy the companionship of other Chihuahuas as opposed to other dogs.
Living Standards
Due to their size, this small dog is fine with apartment living. This does not mean that they need little space to live in. These small dogs need to be treated as if they are larger in size due to their personality traits. But an apartment will suffice.
Also keep in mind that these dogs are not prone to cold weather.
Exercise
Even though they are small, this breed is quite active and needs to be walked on a daily basis.
Be sure to play with your dog and provide him with dog toys and a bone to chew.
Litter Size
This breed will typically have between 1 and 4 pups per litter.
