Copper Toxicosis

What is Copper Toxicosis (CT)?

CT is a condition in which an overabundance of copper compiles in the liver due to the bodies inability to metabolize it. If this disease goes untreated, the end result can be death. Basically, too much copper in the body can be toxic.

Symptoms

This disease does not typically show any signs in the earlier stages. Symptoms of this disorder are commonly related to any symptoms dealing with the liver such as:

  • Weight loss
  • Anorexia
  • Depression
  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Dehydration
As this disease progresses, the dog may encounter problems such as ecchymotic hemorrhages which may cause melena (blood in the stool).

Causes

Seemingly, this disorder is inherited. In other words, it is passed on from the parents.

Treatment and Prevention

The best way to treat this disease is to decrease the dog’s intake of copper. This can be accomplished by changing the animal’s diet. Be sure to consult with your vet for information regarding the proper diet for your dog. In addition, check the labels of dog food before purchasing. The best way to prevent this disease is by not breeding carriers of this disease.
