Craniomandibular Osteopathy

What is Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO)?

CMO is a bone disease that affects dogs during the growing process. More specifically, this disorder has an impact on bones that make up the skull such as:

  • Mandible (lower jaw)
  • Temporal area
  • Tympanic bullae (bone surrounding the middle ear)
Basically, the affects result in an enlargement of the bones. This abnormal structural change is typically found on both sides of the skull (bilateral).

Symptoms

When CMO begins to occur, you may notice swelling in the jaw. The dog may experience some pain when attempting to chew, eat, or open his mouth. They may also drool. In addition, this disorder has caused signs of depression and fever.

Causes

Unfortunately, the exact cause of CMO is uncertain. This disorder is known to be inherited or passed on from the parents.

Treatment and Prevention

CMO is normally treated by means of pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs including prednisone. Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment available focused on slowing or changing the development of this disease. In order to prevent CMO, the best method is not to breed carriers of the disorder.
