  • The English Cocker Spaniel is a well proportioned and compact dog.

  • This breed is roughly 14 to 17 inches tall.

  • They typically weigh between 25 and 35 pounds.

  • They have long hanging ears.

  • Their coat is of medium length on the body and shorter on head. It is more feathery on the ears and lower part of the body including the legs.

  • English Cockers shed moderately.

  • They should be brushed daily (using a soft bristle brush and comb).

  • Make sure that you untangle any mats or knots that are located in the fur.

  • These small dogs should be bathed when necessary.

  • Checking the ears of your English Cocker Spaniel is highly important. As mentioned earlier, this breed may suffer from ear infections and it is recommended that you examine the ears for these types of problems.

  • When trimming, remember to scissor around the pads of the paw.


History

  • This breed is the one of the original spaniels.

  • Seemingly, this dog was the primary source for other spaniel breeds including the following:

    1. English Springer Spaniel
    2. Cocker Spaniel
    3. Welsh Springer Spaniel
    4. Irish Water Spaniel
    5. Sussex Spaniel
    6. The Field Spaneil

  • Initially, this breed was known as a hunting or gun dog. For example, these dogs would be used to scare or fluster woodcocks, which are game birds.

  • The English Cocker Spaniel was recognized by the AKC as a separate breed from the American Cocker Spaniel in 1946.
