Appearance

  • The English Toy Spaniel is a small cobby shaped dog.

  • They are also referred to as King Charles Spaniels.

  • These small dogs stand roughly 10 inches in height.

  • Their weight is normally between 9 and 12 pounds.

  • They have long feathery type ears.

  • Their coat is silky and moderately wavy.

  • This small dog can be found in the same color variations as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. These colors include the following:

    1. Brown and white (Blenheim)
    2. Black and tan
    3. Ruby or solid red


Temperament

  • This breed is intelligent.

  • They are a relatively gentle and normally well-behaved.

  • These small dogs are wonderful with children.

  • They are also good with other dogs and other household pets as well.

  • This small dog tends to be quite affectionate toward its master and immediate family. In general, they are perfect companion dogs.


Living Standards

  • This breed is not overly active and does not require a large yard.

  • If you live in an apartment, these small dogs will be fine joining you.

Exercise

  • Although this breed is not too active, they still require a daily walk.

  • In addition to walking, be sure to play with this small dog on a daily basis.

  • Be sure to provide your pet with dog toys and bones to chew as well.

  • The English Toy is a moderately a healthy breed.

  • They do suffer from some particular health problems such as:

  • These small dogs have a life expectancy of roughly 10 to 12 years of age.

Trainability and Obedience

  • This breed is not too difficult to train.

  • As mentioned earlier, they are intelligent and eager to please.

  • You should be firm and consistent with your commands.

  • Do not be too aggressive with your approach. These small dogs respond better when you are caring and loving towards them (positive reinforcement training is recommended).

  • It is also best to begin training these dogs when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • This small toy breed does not shed a lot and is generally easy to groom.

  • Brush their coat (using a soft bristle brush) once a week.

  • Bathe them when necessary.

  • These small dogs do not require much trimming.


History

  • This breed originated in England during the 1600s.

  • Seemingly, King Charles Spaniels were cross bred with Pugs. As a result, the English Toy Spaniel was developed.

  • These small dogs became the top choice of Royalty.

  • The English Toy Spaniel was first recognized by the AKC in 1886.
