Entropion

What is Entropion?

An eye condition in which the eyelid (primarily the lower eyelid) folds inward causing the dog’s hair to irritate the surface of the eyeball. This condition has the ability to cause eye infections, damage to the cornea, and in severe cases can result in blindness. This condition may or may not affect both eyes.

Symptoms

This disorder will show signs of redness in the eye. The dog may have the tendency to squint and scratch at the affected eye. In addition, the eye may become swollen.

Causes

This condition is believed to be inherited or passed on by the parents

Treatment and Prevention

Surgery is the only form of treatment known to correct this condition. Normally, the operation involves removing a portion of skin located under the eyelid and then stitching the incision. During the stitching process, the eyelid is pulled away from the eye into the correct position. The best way to prevent this disorder is not to breed carriers of the recessive gene. Be sure to consult with your vet for any further information regarding this condition.
