Episodic Falling

What is Episodic Falling (EF)?

EF is a condition in which the dog experiences an increase in muscle that is subject to extreme spasms and tension. This typically occurs when the dog exercises or becomes excited. In more severe cases, the muscle spasms will suddenly occur regardless if the animal is excited.

Symptoms

There are a number of symptoms related to this disorder that happen during an episode including:

  • Stiffness in the back legs
  • Lameness in the form of a bunny hop
  • Drooling
  • Random spasms
  • Bulging eyes due to muscle contractions in the face
  • Momentarily stiffening
  • Tumbling (like a somersault)
  • Walking while holding the head face down and off to one side
  • Inability to open the jaw due to muscle contractions
  • Temporarily the dog may lose control in the hind legs
  • The dog may rise and then fall
In less severe cases, the dog may go on as if nothing has happened. After severe episodes, the dog will normally rest.

Causes

This is an inherited disease or passed on from the parents. It is most common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels .

Treatment and Prevention

There are some medications available that may help decrease the number of episodes the dog will experience and possibly rid the condition entirely. These drugs include:

  • Clonazepam
  • Diazepam
In addition, not breeding carriers of this disorder is another effective method. Be sure to consult with your vet regarding further information of this disorder.
