Health and Life Expectancy

Trainability and Obedience

  • Despite their loyal companionship, these small bulldogs are not the easiest to train.

  • These small dogs can be somewhat stubborn and may tend to ignore you.

  • Be firm with your commands and maintain your consistency while training.

  • It is also important to establish that you are the leader.

  • For the best results, begin training these small dogs when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • Due to their short hair, this dog does not require a lot of grooming.

  • Simply brush their coat once a week with a soft bristle brush. You could also wipe their coat with a warm damp cloth.

  • Trim their nails and bathe when necessary.

History

  • This breed is said to have originated during the 1800s.

  • Seemingly, smaller sized English Bulldogs located in Nottingham England became working dogs for lace makers (primarily for killing rats).

  • During the Industrial Revolution, many lace-makers fled to France in hopes to find work. These men took their dogs with them.

  • As a result, these small dogs became quite popular in France and eventually became known as the "French Bulldog".
