What is Hydrocephalus?
Hydro-cephalus is a disorder in which fluid compiles within the ventricles of the brain. As a result, the ventricles begin to swell and cause pressure which can lead to brain damage or an underdevelopment of brain tissue.
Symptoms
This disorder normally occurs early in the dog’s life (4 months or less). The dog’s head may appear to be quite round on the top like that of a bubble or a dome shape. In addition, the animal will typically have a soft spot on the top of their head. Other symptoms include:
- Blindness
- Seizures
- Lameness
- Slow learning ability
Cause
The cause of this disorder is typically inherited or passed down from the parents. Other possible causes are results of separate conditions such as a brain tumor or a severe head injury.
Treatment and Prevention
Unfortunately, this disorder is not treated with much success. The excess fluid can be drained, however this does not cure the ailment. The best method of prevention is to not breed carriers of this disorder. Be sure to consult with your vet for further information regarding this disease.
