Hypothyroidism

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypo-thyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland has difficulties producing thyroid hormones. In essence, the thyroid gland is known for managing the metabolism of a dog. This is accomplished due to the production of thyroid hormones which aide in normal cellular metabolic functions.

Symptoms

Due to the thyroid gland, multiple organs are able to function properly. Thus, it is difficult to specify any single symptom of this disease. However, a few indications that may be related to this disorder include:

  • Weight gain or obesity
  • Lethargy
  • Anemia
  • Hair loss
  • Extreme shedding
  • High blood cholesterol

Causes

The most common cause of this disorder pertaining to dogs is the deterioration of the thyroid gland by means of the canine’s immune system. Basically, the dog’s immune system will attack the cells located within the thyroid gland. In addition, this disease can be caused by excessive fat penetrating the glands. This disorder can also be caused by other conditions such as cancer.

Treatments and Prevention

Fortunately, treatment for dogs with this disease is quite common. The dog is usually provided with a daily dose of a drug known as "thyroxine", which is an artificial thyroid hormone. Be sure to consult with your vet regarding any questions related to this treatment. In addition, this disorder tends to occur in middle age to older dogs (4 to 10 years of age). In order to help prevent this disease, be sure to have your dog on a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Pay attention to any skin aliments that may affect your dog as well.
