Appearance

  • The Japanese Terrier is a small well balanced dog.

  • They stand roughly 8 to 13 inches in height (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 5 and 10 pounds.

  • These small dogs have a short, smooth, and glossy coat that is silky to the touch.

  • The color of this breed is predominately white throughout the body. The head of this small dog is normally black or black and tan.


Temperament

  • These dogs are known for being rather cheerful.

  • This breed is quite affectionate and enjoys being with their masters and immediate family.

  • They have the tendency of getting attached to a single person. This small dog may also become aggressive toward anyone who threatens this individual.

  • This breed is relatively sensitive to the tone of ones voice and do not respond well when being yelled at.

  • Be calm and consistent when training your Japanese Terrier.

  • This breed is not demanding and lives to please you. Show them that you are the leader and these small dogs will follow your lead.

  • For the best results, begin training this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • Due to the length of their coat, this small terrier is not difficult to groom.

  • They should be brushed on occasion. When brushing, be gentle and use a soft bristle brush or comb.

  • Bathe this dog only when necessary.

  • Trim their nails only when necessary.


History

  • The Japanese Terrier is believed to be the descendent of the Smooth Fox Terriers.

  • The Smooth Fox Terrier traveled to Japan in the 17th century aboard Dutch ships.

  • The Smooth Fox Terrier is believed to have been interbred with local Japanese dogs for the purpose of killing vermin.

  • As time passed, these small dogs became bred as companion and lap dogs.

  • The Japanese Terrier nearly became extinct during WWII.

  • In 2006, this small dog was registered to the United Kennel Club located England.

  • This dog is still one of the rare breeds in existence.
