Appearance

  • The Lakeland Terrier is a sturdy, well proportioned little dog.

  • They resemble that of a Welsh Terrier.

  • They stand roughly 12 to 14 inches in height.

  • They typically weigh between 14 and 17 pounds.

  • This breed has triangular or v-shaped ears that fold downward.

  • These small dogs have a double coat that is wiry on the outer side and softer on the inside side.

  • You can find this breed in the following colors:

    1. black
    2. red
    3. blue
    4. liver
    5. wheaten
    6. They may have saddle markings of blue, liver, or black


Temperament

  • This terrier breed is friendly and affection.

  • They are intelligent as well.

  • They have the tendency to dig, so monitor them if you have a yard.

  • This small dog can be quite noisy at times and is relatively alert. Thus, they are good watch dogs.

  • This breed is wonderful with children and other dogs.


Living Standards

  • These dogs prefer to have a yard to roam in.

  • However, this does not mean that these small dogs can’t live in an apartment.

  • If you live in an apartment, make sure to get this dog plenty of exercise.

Exercise

  • This breed needs to be walked on a daily basis.

  • As mentioned earlier, these small dogs love to play. Therefore, be sure to provide them with dog toys, tennis balls, and bones to chew.

  • You may also take this dog on a jog with you.

Litter Size

  • Lakeland Terrier puppies will normally be born into a litter of 3 to 5 pups.


Health and Life Expectancy

  • This small terrier breed is generally healthy.

  • As these small dogs begin to age, they may experience certain health problems including:

    1. Legg-Perthes Disease
    2. Elbow dysplasia
    3. Hypothyroidism
    4. Cataracts
    5. Lens Luxation

  • The life expectancy of this breed is roughly 12 to 16 years of age.


Trainability and Obedience

  • Due to their intelligence, these dogs are not too difficult to obedience train.

  • When training this breed, it is important to be firm and consistent with your commands. These small dogs love to be challenged, so make sure to incorporate a variety of training techniques.

  • In addition, show your dog that you are the leader. This breed will follow you lead if you do so.

  • For the best results, begin training your dog when he/she is a pup.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • These small terriers typically have their coats plucked. It is recommended to this two to three times throughout the year.

  • Brush and clean their beard on a daily basis.

  • Brush their coat on a weekly basis.

  • The Lakeland Terrier is a moderate to low shedder.


History

  • This dog is one of the older terrier breeds in existence.

  • These small dogs were first developed during the 1800s in Lake District England.

  • This breed is a cross between a Bedlington Terrier and the English Wirehaired Terrier.

  • This small dog was originally bred to kill vermin and hunt other animals such as:

    1. foxes
    2. otter
    3. badger

  • The Lakeland Terrier was first recognized as a breed in 1921. They were recognized by the ACK (1934).
