Appearance

  • The Lowchen gets its name from the way their coat is cut (to resemble that of a lion).

  • They stand 10 to 13 inches in height.

  • They typically weigh between 10 and 20 pounds.

  • This breed has a short strong body.

  • These small dogs have a long wavy coat.

  • They can be found in the following colors:

    1. black
    2. white
    3. lemon


Temperament

  • This breed is relatively intelligent.

  • They tend to be quite affectionate and sociable.

  • These small dogs are good with children, other dogs, and other household pets.

  • These dogs are also quite calm.

  • This small dog may have the tendency to dig.


Living Standards

  • Due to their relaxed personality, this breed will do fine living in an apartment.

  • If you own a home, a small yard will suffice. As mentioned earlier, these small dogs like to dig. Therefore, you may need to monitor them when they are outside.

Exercise

  • This breed needs to be walked on a daily basis.

  • These small dogs also love to play in addition to a walk.

  • Be sure to provide them with dog toys and bones to chew.

  • For the best results, begin training your small dog when he/she is a pup.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • When grooming this breed, be sure to brush them on a consistent basis.

  • These small dogs are normally clipped in three areas:

    1. the front legs
    2. the hindquarters
    3. the tail

  • Bathe when necessary.

  • Trim their nails when necessary.


History

  • Lowchen is a German term meaning “Little Lion”. Thus, it is believe that these small dogs originated in Germany.

  • This breed became a popular during the 1500s in countries such as Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.

  • Unfortunately, this small dog became quite rare after WWII.

  • To date, these small dogs are still uncommon.

  • They were recognized by the AKC in 1996.
