Luxating Patella

What is Luxating Patella or Patella Luxation

Patella luxation is an inherited condition in which the patella (kneecap) dislocates. Unfortunately, this condition is quite common is small dogs especially the toy breeds. In many occurrences, the kneecap will dislocate and then relocate causing a single moment of discomfort or pain. In other instance, having a dislocated kneecap (in both hind legs for example) can alter the dog’s posture.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of this disorder occurs when the dog is running and then suddenly cries out in pain. Other symptoms include reoccurring lameness in the hind legs. You may also notice that the dog’s leg will be extended rearward.

Causes

As mentioned earlier, this condition is typically inherited or passed on from the parents.

Treatments & Prevention

There are no known therapies or supplements that can have an impact on correcting this condition. Surgery is normally recommended if the situation is severe. Basically, surgery can change the manner in which the patella moves as well as help it stay structurally secure. The best prevention method is not to breed carriers of this disorder.
