  • The Maltese is a sturdy little dog and a member of the toy group.

  • They stand roughly 8 to 10 inches tall.

  • They typically weigh between 6 and 10 pounds.

  • This breed has a single layer coat that is silky to the touch and can grow to roughly 8 inches in length.

  • These small dogs are typically found in either white or ivory.

  • Be sure to check the ears on a regular basis in order to avoid infection. They should be kept relatively dry.

  • Check and clean their eyes on a regular basis as well.

  • You may also want to clip these small dogs once every two months.

  • Remember to trim any hair around their bottom for hygiene purposes.

  • This breed is not a heavy shedder and therefore, may be more suitable for someone with allergies.


History

  • This dog originated in Italy. More specifically, in the city of Malta.

  • Seemingly, this breed is believed to be a mix between a poodle and a miniature spaniel.

  • These small dogs were popular among royalty throughout the world.

  • They made their way to Europe with Crusaders returning from the Mediterranean.

  • This small dog was first brought to America in 1877.

  • Shortly thereafter, this breed was recognized by the AKC (1888).
