Appearance

  • The Manchester Terrier has a toned little body.

  • They stand 10 to 12 inches tall (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 6 and 8 pounds.

  • Their coat is smooth and thick.

  • This small dog can be found in black and tan coloring.


Temperament

  • This breed is known for being loyal to its master and family.

  • These small dogs are affectionate and energetic.

  • They tend to be good jumpers and they enjoy digging.

  • These little terriers can be somewhat independent and stubborn.

  • They are also quite alert and will definitely let you know when there is a stranger around.

  • This breed is good with other dogs when socialized as pups. Unfortunately, they are not as good with other small pets.

  • Due to their intelligence and eagerness to please, these small dogs are not overly difficult to obedience train.

  • Be firm, confident, and consistent when training this breed.

  • Be sure to show these dogs that you are the leader.

  • These terriers are also quite agile and can be taught tricks.

  • For the best results, begin training this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

History

  • This dog is the oldest of the terrier breeds.

  • These small dogs originated in Manchester England during the 19th century.

  • They were primarily used to kill vermin, which ultimately earned them the name “rat terrier”.

  • This breed is a mix between a Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet.

  • Two variations of this breed exists:

    1. The Standard breed
    2. The Toy breed

  • These dogs were used in the creation of breeds such as the Doberman Pinscher and the Airedale Terrier.

  • This breed was registered with the AKC in 1886.
