Appearance

  • Miniature Pinscher dogs are toned, proportionally built, and members of the toy group.

  • They stand roughly 10 to 12 inches in height.

  • They typically weigh between 8 and 10 pounds.

  • This dog resembles that of a smaller Doberman Pinscher in appearance.

  • These small dogs have a strong muzzle.

  • Their ears sit high on the head and can be cropped or natural.

  • They have a short coat that is relatively smooth.

  • This small dog can be found in the following colors:

    1. Black with brown markings
    2. chocolate with tan markings
    3. red with black hairs


Temperament

  • These small dogs are generally loyal.

  • They are highly intelligent, alert, and energetic.

  • This breed is pleasant to be around. When properly socialized, they get along with other dogs, pets, and children.

  • These dogs can be somewhat wary of strangers and thus, are good watch dogs.


Living Standards

  • This is a relatively active little dog and enjoys the luxury of a small to medium size yard.

Training Miniature Pinschers

  • Due to their intelligence, this small toy dog is not overly difficult to train.

  • These small dogs must be shown that you are the leader. Once this has been determined, they will follow your lead.

  • Be firm, confident, and consistent with your training methods.

  • Also, be sure to socialize this dog as a pup. In doing so, he/she will do wonderful with other dogs and animals later on in life.

  • For the best results, begin training this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • Due to their short haired coat, these dogs are not difficult to groom.

  • Simply brush this small dog on a regular basis (use a soft bristle brush).

  • Bathe them when necessary.

  • These small dogs are considered to be average shedders.


History

  • This breed is believed to be a cross between an Italian Greyhound, a German Pinscher and a Dachshund.

  • These small dogs originated in Germany. In fact, the term “pinscher” means terrier in the German language.

  • Originally, these dogs were used to kill vermin.

  • This small dog is known as the “King of the Toys”. In other words, the king of the toy breeds.

  • This breed was admitted to the AKC as a Pincscher (Toy) in 1925.
