Appearance

  • The Norfolk Terrier dog is a solid or tough little breed.

  • They stand 8 to 10 inches tall.

  • They typically weigh between 10 and 15 pounds.

  • They have a wiry type coat.

  • These small dogs can be found in the following colors:

    1. grizzle
    2. black and tan
    3. red
    4. wheaten


Temperament

  • This small terrier is relatively playful and typically loyal to its master.

  • They are an energetic and easy going breed.

  • Keep in mind however, that these small dogs are a part of the terrier family and be independent and stubborn.

  • These dogs are also intelligent and alert, which makes them good watch dogs.

  • They have a tendency to dig as well.

  • If properly socialized, this breed is good with responsible children and other dogs. However, it is not recommended to leave this little terrier alone with other small house hold pets.


Living Standards

  • Due to their energetic personality, this dog prefers a yard to roam in.

  • They will do okay in an apartment as long as they are exercised regularly.

Exercise

  • This breed should be walked on a daily basis.

  • You should also allow these dogs to run in a safe confined area.

  • Be sure to provide them with dog toys, tennis balls, and bones to chew.

Litter Size

  • This breed will typically have between 2 and 4 pups per litter.


Health and Life Expectancy

  • This is typically a healthy breed.

  • Certain health issues related to these small dogs include:

    1. Heart Disease
    2. Luxating Patella
    3. Collapsed Trachea

  • The life expectancy of this breed is roughly 12 to 14 years of age.


Training and Obedience

  • As mentioned earlier, this is an intelligent breed. Thus, they are not too difficult to train.

  • Be firm and consistent with your training methods.

  • Be sure to show that you are the leader.

  • These small dogs have the ability to learn rather quickly and will do so if they feel that you are in control.

  • Remember to socialize these dogs when they are pups. Likewise, it is best to begin training this small dog at an early age.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • This breed is not overly difficult to groom.

  • Brush these them on a weekly basis (use a soft bristle brush).

  • For good hygiene, trim their bottom.

  • Bathe and clip them every 8 to 12 weeks.

  • This small dog is a low to moderate shedder.


History

  • This little terrier originated in East Anglia, England during the 20th century.

  • These small dogs were bred to kill vermin.

  • They was considered to be the same breed as the Norwich Terrier. The only difference between the two was their ear type (Norwich had perked ears and the Norfolk had dropped ears).

  • In 1964, the breed was separated and the Norfolk Terrier was distinguished.

  • The AKC first recognized this breed in 1979.
