Appearance

  • The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a hardy dog.

  • They are 13 to 15 inches in height.

  • They typically weigh between 30 and 40 pounds.

  • These dogs have a rough outer coat that is relatively long. Their inner coat is much shorter and softer.

  • These dogs are typically found in white with a variety of color combinations including:

    1. sable
    2. lemon
    3. black
    4. orange
    5. grizzle


Temperament

  • This breed is loyal and friendly.

  • They seemed to be quite happy the majority of the time, especially around their masters and immediate family.

  • These dogs are affectionate and crave attention from their owners.

  • They are typically gentle and good with children as well as other dogs.

  • This breed is also a good therapy dog.

  • These dogs are intelligent and like to explore their surroundings.

  • This breed should not be left alone for hours at a time. When bored, these dogs can become quite mischievous.


Living Standards

  • The will do best in a home with a small to moderate size yard.

  • This dog will be fine in an apartment if exercised regularly.

Exercise

  • These dogs should be walked on a daily basis (a moderate to long distance is recommended).

  • You could also jog with them at your side (on a leash).

  • You may allow these dogs run in a safe confined area as well.

  • Be sure to provide them with dog toys and bones to chew.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • This breed requires moderate care in regards to grooming.

  • They should be brushed at least once a week (use a pin brush and comb).

  • Be sure to untangle any mats or knots in the fur.

  • Bathe them when necessary.

  • Check and clean the ears on a consistent basis.

  • Check the teeth for tartar build up.


History

  • The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was developed in the area of Vendeen located in France during the 16th century.

  • Originally, the purpose of these small dogs was to hunt rabbit.

  • These small dogs are still quite rare in the U.S.

  • This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1991.
