Phosphofructokinase Deficiency


What is Phosphofructokinase deficiency (PFK)?

PFK is an enzyme that is related to energy metabolism in red blood cells and skeletal muscle during strenuous exercise (typically found in American Cocker Spaniels). Basically, this disease affects the red blood cells in a premature manner which reduces the tolerance for exercise. Small dogs with this disorder may have mild anemia related to exercise or extreme heat.


Symptoms

Symptoms of this disorder include:

  • Dark urine
  • Pale discoloration of the gums
  • Fever
  • Weakness
  • lethargy


Causes

This disease is primarily inherited. Typically, both parents are carriers yet they may not show signs of the disease.


Treatments and Prevention

Seemingly, there are no effective treatments for this disease. It is recommended to talk to your vet in order to discuss further possibilities. The best prevention method is not to breed dogs carrying this disease.
