Appearance

  • The Pomeranian is a member of the toy dog breeds.

  • They stand 7 to 12 inches tall.

  • They typically weigh between 3 and 7 pounds.

  • These small dogs have ears that stand straight up (erect).

  • They have a double coat that is quite thick.

  • Their coat is normally longer around the neck area as well as the chest.

  • This breed can be found in the following colors:

Temperament

  • This dog breed is relatively intelligent.

  • To avoid an overabundance of hair in your home, brush them on a daily basis (use a soft bristle brush and a comb).

  • Be sure to check/clean their eyes and ears frequently.

  • Monitor their teeth for any decay or tartar build up.

  • Dry shampoo these small dogs when necessary.


History

  • Originally, the Pomeranians were larger dogs used for herding sheep.

  • They were located in an area of Germany and Poland that was once known as Pomerania.

  • These dogs were owned by royalty such as Queen Victoria. Seemingly, the Queen bred these dogs down in size.

  • Afterward, the Pomeranian became quite popular throughout England.

  • These small dogs were recognized by the AKC in 1888.
