Puppy Temperament Test, Puppy Personality Test
What is the Puppy Temperament Test or Puppy Personality Test?
In addition to physical health examinations, it is vital to determine your puppy’s temperament prior to purchase. This is important because the pup you choose is going to be a part of your life for quite some time and the more friendly he is, the better off your relationship is going to be. But how do you judge the pup’s personality and social behavior the first time you meet him?
Believe it or not, there are a variety of ways to judge your pup’s personality before you bring him home. We combine these methods and refer to them as the “Puppy Temperament Test” or the "Puppy Personality Test". This is an easy 4 step process that will help you determine which “pick of the litter” is perfect for you!
- Before entering the room, get a view of the pups from an area where you are unnoticeable. Observe the pups frolicking and socializing with each other. Make note of any pups being passive, shy, quiet or uninterested. This is uncommon behavior in a small pup.
- Now try sitting on the floor with the puppies. The majority of them should be willing to socialize with you by climbing into your lap, licking you, and playfully nipping at you (they may be teething). Pay attention to the pups that are not willing to join the others in frolicking with you. This is uncommon in most pups and you may want to avoid these types of dogs.
- Have a small ball or something moderately noisy with you (such as an empty soda can with change inside). Gently bounce the ball or roll the soda can and observe which pups chase after the object and which ones are afraid or uninterested.
- Once you have narrowed down your choice of puppies, pick one up and go to another room away from the other dogs. Sit down on the floor once again and position the pup directly beside you. Now observe his behavior. If he is jumping and licking on you, this is a good sign. Pick him up as if you were holding a baby and begin to rub his stomach. If he does not resist you and settles calmly in that position, you probably have the right dog for you!
**Remember, always take your desired pup to your veterinarian for a full examination. Your vet should provide you with the best advice regarding the pup.
