Temperament
These dogs are quite energetic.
They are intelligent and alert.
These dogs can also be rather affectionate toward their master and immediate family.
This terrier breed is good with children and other dogs. They should not however, be left alone with other small household pets such as hamster or gerbils.

Living Standards
Due to their energetic personality, these small terriers are better off with a small to medium size yard run around in.
They will be able to live in an apartment as long as they get plenty of exercise.
This breed will also do well living in a farm type environment.
Exercise
This dog requires a daily walk of a moderate to long distance.
You can also jog with them beside you on a leash.
Allow this breed to run in a safe confined area.
Be sure to provide them with dog toys, tennis balls, and bones to chew.
If given the opportunity, these dogs will enjoy swimming as well.

Trainability and Obedience
Due to their intelligence, these small terriers are not difficult to obedience train.
Prove that you are the leader and in control.
Be firm and consistent when training. They are quick to learn and eager to please. Thus, they will not disappoint you.
It is best to begin training these dogs when they are pups.
Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.
Grooming
Due to the length of their hair, this breed is not difficult to groom.
Simply brush this small dog once a week (use a soft bristle brush).
Bathe them when necessary and clip their nails when necessary.
History
This breed originated in England during the early 1800s.
They were originally a mix between a Manchester Terrier and a Smooth Fox Terrier.
This breed was then brought to the U.S. in the late 1800s and cross-bred with another Smooth Fox Terrier, a Beagle, and a Whippet.
They were given the name “Rat Terrier” by Teddy Roosevelt who owned three of these small dogs.
Basically, these dogs are excellent at killing vermin.
