- The outer coat is full, long, and straight. The inner coat is quite thick and soft to the touch.

- Blue Merle
- Tri-Colored mixed with black, white, and tan
- Black and white (Bi-Black)
- Bi-Blue (no tan markings)
- Sable
Temperament
- The Sheltie is a good companion dog.
- In general, this breed is loyal and affectionate toward its master and immediate family.
- These dogs are also quite alert, yappy, and wary of strangers. Thus, they are good watch dogs.
- They are highly intelligent.
- They are good with children, other dogs, and other household pets.
- This dog breed has a tendency to chase after things as well.
Living Standards
- These dogs enjoy running, so a small to medium size yard is preferred.
- They can also live in an apartment if exercised regularly.
Exercise
- This breed needs to be walked on a daily basis.
- Allow them a chance to run in a safe confined area as well.
- You can also jog with this small dog beside you on a leash.
- Be sure to put aside some time to play with your Sheltie in addition to a walk. Provide them with dog toys, tennis balls, frisbees, and bones to chew.
Litter Size
- This breed will typically have 4 to 6 pups per litter.
Health and Life Expectancy
Trainability and Obedience
- Due to their intelligence, this breed is not difficult to train.
- These small dogs are eager to please and will listen as long as you show them that you are the leader.
- When training your Sheltie, be firm and consistent. DO NOT be aggressive. This dog can be quite sensitive and will disregard you.
- Be calm and patient, this small breed will respond to your commands in a timely manner.
- It is best to begin training and socializing these dogs when they are pups.
- Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.
Shetland Sheepdog Grooming
- Grooming this breed is more maintenance related than it is difficult.
- In order to avoid an overabundance of hair in your home, brush your Sheltie on a daily basis.
- Remove any knots or mats located in the fur.
- You can dry shampoo these small dogs when necessary.
- Clip their nails when necessary.
- Check their eyes and ears on a regular basis.
History
- This breed originated in the Shetland Islands, which are located off the coast of Scotland.
- They are believed to be related to the Rough Collie.
- Shelties were developed in order to herd cows and sheep.
- This dog has become quite popular in both American and England.
- Due to the over-breeding of these dogs in various “puppy mills”, it has become somewhat difficult to find well-bred Shetland Sheepdogs.
