Appearance

  • The Shih Tzu is a short, stocky little dog.

  • They stand 8 to 11 inches in height (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 9 and 16 pounds.

  • These small dogs have a more round shaped head.

  • Their body is of moderate length.

  • They have a double coat that is relatively long and straight on the outside. The inner coat is thick and soft to the touch.

  • You can find these small dogs in solid colors, two-color variations, or tri-color variations. Regardless of the type of variation, the most common colors include:

    3. brindle
    4. gold
    5. red
    6. blue


Temperament

  • These are lovable little dogs.

  • In essence, they are wonderful lapdogs.

  • They enjoy being with their master and immediate family.

  • These small dogs like to be indoors, preferably lying on the couch with you.

  • They are good with older, more responsible children. They are also good with dogs and other pets.

  • This small breed can be quite alert and will bark at unfamiliar sounds. Thus, they are good watch dogs.

  • These small dogs need to be walked on a daily basis (a short distance will suffice).

  • An occasional run in a safe open area will be good for this small dog as well. Keep in mind however, that this breed does not do well in extreme heat.

  • Be consistent, calm, and patient with your training methods (DO NOT be aggressive).

  • It is best to begin socializing and training this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • These small dogs should be brushed on a daily basis (use a soft bristle brush). Be sure to untangle any knots or mats in their fur.

  • You may want to have this little dog professionally trimmed.

  • Be sure to clean their eyes and ears (consult with your vet for the proper cleaning products).

  • They are a moderate shedder.


History

  • The time frame in which the Shih-Tzu originated is somewhat uncertain.

  • Seemingly, the Shih-Tzu was developed by crossing the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese.

  • The Shih Tzu was quite popular among Chinese royalty. Moreover, the name “Shih-Tzu” means “Lion Dog” in Chinese.

  • This small dog was first brought to Europe in 1908.

  • This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1969.

  • To date, this is one of the more popular dogs worldwide.
