Appearance

  • Silky Terrier dogs are relatively short and somewhat delicate.

  • They stand 9 to 10 inches tall (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 8 and 11 pounds.

  • These small dogs have a long, silky coat.

  • They can be found in the following colors:

    1. gray and tan
    2. black and tan
    3. blue and tan
    4. silver and tan
    5. tri-colored


Temperament

  • The Silky Terrier is an energetic little dog.

  • This breed has a strong sense of loyalty toward their master and immediate family.

  • These small dogs love attention and should not be neglected or left alone for long periods of time (they may dig wholes outside or be destructive indoors).

  • They are also alert, wary of strangers, and will bark at unfamiliar noises. Thus, they are good watch dogs.

  • Due to their territorial type nature, these little terriers do not always get along well with other dogs and should not be left alone with small household pets such as hamster or gerbils.

  • This small dog is better suited for more responsible children.


Living Standards

  • These dogs enjoy running around outside. Thus, a home with a small to medium size yard will suffice.

  • They are also fine for apartment living. Just be sure to get them plenty of exercise.

Exercise

  • This breed should be walked on a daily basis (a moderate to long walk is recommended).

  • These dogs have quite a bit of stamina and can easily jog with you on a leash.

  • You may allow this breed to run in a safe fenced-in area.

Litter Size

  • These dogs will typically have 3 to 5 pups per litter.

  • This is relativley healthy breed.

  • Certain health conditions related to these small dogs include:

    2. Legg-Perthes Disease

  • The life expectancy of these dogs is typically between 12 and 15 years of age.


Trainability and Obedience

  • These small dogs are not overly difficult to train.

  • Be firm and consistent when training.

  • Prove that you are the leader and this little dog will follow your lead.

  • For the best results, begin socializing and training this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • Due to their tendency to develop mats in their fur, this little terrier should be brushed on a daily basis (use a soft bristle brush and a comb).

  • They should be trimmed every so often. It is recommended to have them professionally trimmed.

  • This breed should also be bathed regularly in order to keep their coat healthy.

  • This small dog sheds very little hair.


History

  • This small terrier was developed during the late 1800s.

  • They are a mix between the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier.

  • This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1959.

  • This small breed has a knack for killing vermin, but is primarily bred as a companion dog.
