Appearance

  • The Skye Terrier is a short little dog.

  • They stand roughly 9 to 10 inches tall (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 25 and 40 pounds.

  • These dogs have a double coat that is soft on the inner part. The outer coat is more straight and average in length.

  • You can find these small dogs in the following colors:

    1. fawn
    2. black
    3. cream
    4. silver
    5. dark gray
    6. light gray
    7. blue
    8. gray blue


Temperament

  • The Skye Terrier is a loyal to his master and immediate family.

  • These dogs can be somewhat wary around strangers.

  • They are alert and will bark at unfamiliar sounds. Thus, they are decent watch dogs.

  • These small dogs are not overly active, however they do like to run and play outdoors.

  • These little terriers can be territorial and are not necessarily good with other dogs (especially dogs of the same sex). In addition, this breed tends to chase small animals and should not be left alone with small household pets.

  • These dogs are better with older, more responsible children.

  • This breed needs affection. If they are neglected or left alone for long periods of time they can be quite mischievous.


Living Standards

  • This breed is good in a home with a small yard. Be sure to monitor them however, they like to dig.

  • If you live in an apartment, this small dog will be fine. Just be sure to get him plenty of exercise.

Exercise

  • This breed should be walked on a daily basis (a short to moderate distance will suffice).

  • You may also let them run in a safe confined area.

  • Be sure to provide these little dogs with dog toys, tennis balls, and bones to chew.

Litter Size

  • This breed will typically have between 3 and 6 pups per litter.


Healthy and Life Expectancy

  • This is generally a healthy breed.

  • Certain health issues related to these small dogs include:

    1. Allergies
    2. Cancer
    3. Hypothyroidism
    4. Hip Dysplasia
    5. Herniated Disc
    6. Autoimmune Complications

  • The life span of this breed is typically between 12 and 14 years of age.


Trainability and Obedience

  • Training this small terrier breed is not an easy task.

  • They have the tendency to be somewhat independent and stubborn.

  • You must show that you are the leader and in control.

  • Be firm and consistent, DO NOT be aggressive. This small dog does not respond well to aggression.

  • It is recommended to begin training and socializing this breed when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • Depending on how long you will keep their coat, grooming these dogs is not too difficult.

  • It is quite common for owners to simply trim the coat short. This decision will keep brushing to a minimum.

  • If you choose to keep the coat hair long, then daily brushing may be required.

  • This dog is a moderate shedder.

  • Bathe them when necessary.


History

  • This breed was developed by mixing terrier breeds with the Maltese.

  • These dogs originated on an island located in the Scottish Hebrides known as "Skye".

  • This dog breed dates as far back as the early 1600s. Therefore, they are one of the oldest terrier breeds.

  • This breed was commonly used to kill vermin.

  • They also used this small dog to hunt animals such as fox and badger.

  • During the 19th century, this breed became rather popular among royalty.

  • The Skye Terrier was first recognized by the AKC in 1887.
