Appearance

  • The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is strong, stocky, and muscular.

  • They stand roughly 14 to 16 inches tall (at the shoulders).

  • They typically weigh between 13 and 15 pounds.

  • This dog has a wide shaped head and a powerful jaw.

  • They have a short haired coat that is relatively smooth.

  • You can find this breed in the following colors:

    2. white

    4. red
    5. fawn
    6. Some will have white markings


Temperament

  • These dogs are bold and hardworking.

  • They are quite loyal to their master and immediate family.

  • They are also intelligent, athletic, and playful. This dog does not mind roughhousing for entertainment purposes and enjoys indoor activities.

  • These dogs do not have a tendency to bark a lot. However, they will alert you to any visitors or unfamiliar sounds. Thus, they are decent watchdogs.

  • In general, this breed is quite friendly toward strangers.

Living Standards

  • These dogs are moderately active outdoors. Thus, a home with a small to medium size yard will suffice.

  • This dog will do fine in an apartment. Just be sure to get him plenty of exercise.

Exercise

  • This terrier breed should be walked on a daily basis. (A moderate to long distance is recommended).

  • You can also take this dog on a jog with you. Just keep him on a leash when doing so.

  • This breed also enjoys playing with dog toys and chewing on bones. Be sure to get a dog toy that is “built to last”. These dogs will chew through plastic quite easily.

Litter Size

  • This breed will typically have 4 to 6 puppies per litter.


Health and Life Expectancy

  • This is generally a healthy breed.

  • Certain health issues related to these small dogs include:

    1. Hip Dysplasia
    2. Entropion
    3. Hypothyroidism
    4. Cataracts

  • This breed does not always do well in extreme weather conditions.

  • The life expectancy of these dogs is typically between 12 and 14 years of age.


Trainability and Obedience

  • Due to their intelligence, this breed is quite trainable. As mentioned earlier however, they can be independent and stubborn.

  • In order to train these dogs, you must be confident in your tone, persistent, and firm.

  • It is vital that you show that you are the leader.

  • This breed is capable of agility training as well.

  • It is recommended to begin socializing and training these dogs when they are pups.

  • Remember that any small dog breed can develop small dog syndrome if not properly trained.

Grooming

  • This small dog is not overly difficult to groom.

  • Simply brush them on a regular basis.

  • Check their eyes and ears regularly as well.

  • Bathe them when necessary.


History

  • The Staffordshire Bull Terrier originated in Staffordshire, England during the 19th century.

  • This dog is a mix between various terrier breeds (close in relation to the Manchester Terrier) and the Bulldog.

  • In essence, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred in order to compete in the sport of bull baiting.

  • Over time, this sport decreased in popularity and so did the demand for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

  • These dogs were brought to the U.S. in the early 1900s and seemingly, regained their popularity.

  • This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1974.
