What is a Toy Dog or Toy Breed?
In essence, Toy Dogs are simply a grouping of the smallest size dogs.
The majority of these small dogs are typically between 8 and 12 inches
in height and generally weigh between 6 and 15 pounds. Out of the current
Toy Group, no breed is more than 18 inches tall (at the shoulders).
In addition, no breed will weigh much more than 20 pounds.
Are Toy Breeds primarily lap dogs?
A large portion of these small breeds are considered lapdogs. Certain breeds however, are hunting/working dogs that were bred down in size in order to do a specific job. For example, the Affenpincsher, the Toy Fox Terrier, the Miniature Pinscher and the Manchester Terrier were all used to kill vermin. Thus, some of these small dogs are tougher than they are elegant.

Are Toy Breeds good with children?
The majority of these small dogs are better suited for older, more responsible children. This is primarily due to their size and temperament. Basically, these dogs need to follow a pack leader. This individual must prove that he/she is in charge. Young children may not display the proper leadership and in addition, may also be too rough when handling the animal. As a result, some of these dogs may become aggressive and wary of children.

Are Toy Breeds good for city and apartment living?
Most Toy Dog breeds are perfect for city and apartment style living. Due to their size, these dogs do not require a lot of space and they can adapt quite nicely to their surroundings. They can also get plenty of exercise just by playing indoors. Keep in mind however; these small dogs still need to be walked on a daily basis and have an opportunity to run in a safe area.
